review from Exclaim Magazine - by Stuart Green:

Considered within the music industry as one of the most reliable and best drummers for hire, it's Freese's work as the skin basher of record for the ever-irreverent Vandals that has the greatest impact on his first solo record, especially on tracks like "Playboy Mansion," "Bloodmobile" and "Josh Freese is Ready." In fact, there's very little evidence of his time spent recording the new Guns N' Roses or A Perfect Circle records, except in a sort of affectionately mocking metal posturing kind of way on "Rock N' Roll Chicken" and "Men and Women." It is, as the title suggests, a one-man orgy of pop punk humour and mayhem. In true Dave Grohl-inspired fashion, Freese steps out from behind the kit to play almost every instrument on this 12-track (11 originals and a cover of Urge Overkill's "Queen of the Gangsters") collection as well as sing. Of course he's the guy behind the kit too. But his work with such modern day troubadours as Paul Westerberg and Chris Cornell is evident on "Caffeine & Vaseline" and his ode to the TLC chick with the patch, "Why Won't Left Eye Get With Me," as is his standing membership as the replacement drummer for Devo on "So All Under Me." Freese is not only the hardest working drummer in show business, he's a pretty decent songwriter too. Then again, after spending time with such a diverse roster of artists, it's not really that surprising. For more evidence of Freese's talent, check out the brilliant new Vandals record, Look What I Almost Stepped In, their best since 1995's Live Fast, Diarrhea. (Kung Fu)

We all went to the Playboy Mansion, Partied with the Marilyn Manson. I think my time's arrived at last, I was doing cocaine off Miss Octobers' Ass. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. It's not the kind of shit that I'd make up. We all went to the Playboy Mansion, Met some girl with a breast expansion. Saw the stupid car she bought, and got a hand job out in the parking lot. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. Don't ask me about everybody there, but we did get drunk with that basketball guy with the funny hair. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. You don't believe me but it's true. You don't believe me and you don't have to. It's not the kind of shit that I'd make up.

The rock 'n' roll chicken, he had to go away We moved him out last night to where he now will stay He got annoying, he got too loud For a minute there we all were proud, we were all proud He lost against his will to one of the same kind A modernized brother both found right at Christmas time He had a mission to wake us up on time For a while there he was all mine, he was all mine His hands did much more than simply play guitar They told us what time it was much like the morning star He didn't need no sex or drugs, just a little rock 'n' roll He sang his heart out oh so much That it finally took it's toll Close to perfection for which he always strives For a while there he touched our lives He's on a mission to wake us up on time For a minute there he was all mine, he was all mine

I want distortion I want Slayer I want a prostitute and not pay her Don't really matter what else you say Just tell 'em all I'm ready right away Right away, right away, right away

Caffeine and vaseline bought for my sweetheart True love if you know what I mean Down at the mini-mart I'll laugh when she falls down, stop when she turns around She wants her rabbits foot so she'll be guarded I said "don't talk that way.....you sound retarded" God knows that I will try Ten bucks says she will cry, ten bucks says she will cry Ten bucks says she will cry, ten bucks says she will cry She thinks I'm being mean and I don't blame her It ain't easy being green and we both know that So what if it's obscene? Caffeine and vaseline, caffeine and vaseline Caffeine and vaseline, caffeine and vaseline Caffeine and vaseline, caffeine and vaseline My baby's big and dumb She'll kick the shit out of everyone but me I'm hers and she is mine I ask her how she is and she says "fine" It ain't easy being green...caffeine and vaseline! Caffeine and vaseline, caffeine and vaseline Caffeine and vaseline, caffeine and vaseline Caffeine and vaseline Vaseline

Reviewed by Vincent Jeffries
"This debut from drummer-to-the-'90s-rock-stars Josh Freese delivers so much massive guitar pop that just a couple of listens will be enough to hook music fans looking to fill a hole in their collection of good-time pop-punk. With titles like "Rock and Roll Chicken" and "Why Won't Left Eye Get With Me," Freese's light-hearted solo sentiment is in stark contrast to the drummer's more celebrated employers, A Perfect Circle and latter-day Guns 'n' Roses. Headier tracks "Ass Backwards" and "Caffeine and Vaseline," while just as catchy as Freese's campier material, don't approach the musician's quirky lyrical standard. Hardly enough to exercise listeners' aural shock absorbers, these bumps in the road have the impact of a crushed frisbee. With the support of a major label and more refined production, Freese could easily realize his lyrical potential, and join Phil Collins and the similarly influenced Dave Grohl in the improbably exclusive club of former drum sidemen turned outright pop stars. All career considerations aside, The Notorious One Man Orgy is a splendid romp that provides all the pop to both satisfy and surprise fans familiar with Freese's impressive punk, new wave, and metal discography."
